Plant your umbrella somewhere along the 1.5 miles of gold sparkling sand of Coronado Beach. With public restrooms, showers and on duty lifeguards, it is the perfect place to build a few sand castles. Take a stroll down to the iconic Hotel del Coronado, order a drink at the Sun Deck Bar & Grill, and watch the sun set over the Pacific. Free parking is available along Ocean Boulevard.
Prefer to interact more with sea life than lounge on a beach? Visit La Jolla Cove. Known for it tide pools and seals (both the "flippered" variety and the Navy type), La Jolla offers plenty of opportunities to view marine life up close. Snorkel, stand-up paddle board, kayak or simply swim with sea lions, seals, and a variety of fish and crustaceans.
A trip to San Diego would not be complete without a trip to the world's premiere zoo. Home to 3,500 rare and endangered species, the zoo spreads out over 100 acres. It is beautifully landscaped with 700,000 exotic plans offering gorgeous views and shady resting spots throughout the park. The acreage is very hilly, so wear comfortable shoes. And plan to take the 35 minute guided bus tour for a great overview of the zoo's offerings. You can also utilize the Skyfari Aerial tram or "Kangaroo" buses to get from one side of the zoo to the other. Tour bus, Skyfari, and Kangaroo buses are all included with the price of day admission. The San Diego zoo is located in Balboa park and has free parking.
For the more adventurous, San Diego Safari Park is located 30 miles north in Escondido. This open field environment allows visitors to ride through free range animal areas on trams and caravans. It's the closest thing to an African Safari this side of the Nile River (or at least the Mississippi.)
