South Padre Island is the perfect destination for those who love the sea. A barrier island located off the southern coast of Texas, it’s a sea lovers dream. With an average high temp of 68 degrees in January (avg. low of 54), South Padre is a year round option to visit the ocean. Explore the multitude of things you can do in this island paradise:
The island is half a mile wide at it’s widest point, so no matter where you are, you are within walking distance of dipping your toes in the surf. Many of the beach areas, deemed the cleanest beaches in Texas, are in front of hotels and other commerce. To enjoy the waves in a little less developed area, visit one of the public parks. Isla Blanca Park beach is on the south side of the island. A county owned park, there is a small per car entry fee. However, the clean beaches and soft sand make it worth it. Another option is Boca Chica State Park. Though technically not on the island, it is located at the southernmost tip of Texas, in the Las Palomas Wildlife Management area.
If you are lucky, you might get to see a dolphin as you walk one of the beaches of South Padre Island, or you can up those chances by taking an hour and a half long Dolphin Tour. Seating on the boat is limited to six people per tour (plus the Captain and the "dolphin dog"), so it is an intimate and interactive experience. Learn more about dolphins at the Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center. Please note: There are no dolphins "in captivity" at this location. Though, you can meet a rescued giant tortoise, turtles, iguana, and fish up close.
Marvel at the biggest, freestanding, outdoor sandcastle in the United States. Then, learn to build your own by taking sandcastle building lessons. Learn how to "stack wet sand, carve sharp details (including stairs) and finish your sculpture to a high standard" from the experts at All American Sandcastles. You'll even receive a basic toolkit with your lesson, so you can create on your own.
Surf, stand-up paddle board, or boogie board to your heart's content. Visitors can also learn to windsurf or kiteboard. South Padre has a multitude of ways to ride the waves and numerous vendors to rent equipment (and get lessons). Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy the Texas Gulf Coast from the water.
Explore South Padre island on horseback. Take a morning ride with a small group before the beach gets busy. Or take a sunset ride and get some fantastic pictures of the sun setting over the Gulf. Either way, you will make a lifetime memory.
South Padre Island, there is something for everyone to love!
