How to select the perfect vacation rental in Hawaii

Aloha from the Paradise of the Pacific. If you’re craving sandy beaches, adventure, and culture—look no further than Hawaii. Made up of six islands, Hawaii offers everything from relaxing beachside getaways, to outdoorsy hikes and water sports. Learn about native culture in Oahu, tour active volcanoes on Big Island, hike around tropical rainforests of Kauai, and drive the thrilling Road to Hana in Maui. Whether you’re a newlywed looking for your first big escapade as a married couple or a family looking to find entertainment for everyone, you can’t go wrong with Hawaii.

Not sure where to start? Check out the best destinations in the state for beach lovers, adventure seekers, and cultural connoisseurs—there’s something for everyone in Hawaii.

  1. Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture in Oahu. As the gateway to the Hawaiian islands, Oahu is both the most populated and the most visited of the islands. Despite its popularity, Oahu remains the “heart of Hawaii” and one of the best destinations to immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture. Visit the Iolani Palace, the only official royal palace of the U.S., or the USS Arizona Memorial to pay homage to the lives lost at Pearl Harbor. For more outdoorsy activities, play along the coast at beaches such as Lanikai Beach, explore Oahu’s diverse collection of plant life in Waimea Valley, or get up close to green sea turtles on a Turtle Canyon Snorkel Cruise.
  2. Visit the Hawaiian Islands’ only active volcanoes on Big Island. As the largest island of Hawaii, Big Island offers a wide variety of outdoorsy experiences. Thanks to the elevations and the shielding effects from two of the island’s five volcanoes, visitors experience eleven of the world’s thirteen climate zones. While on the island, make plans to tour Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world; Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world; and dormant Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world. Big Island also offers some of the most breathtaking hikes and secluded beaches.
  3. Hike around majestic Kauai, known famously as the Garden Island. Kauai is both the oldest and northernmost island in Hawaii. It’s landscape features emerald valleys, tropical rainforests, forking rivers and cascading waterfalls. Kayak the Wailua River, snorkel on Poipu Beach, hike the trails of Kokee State Park, play along the North Shore beaches, or zipline to see a 360 view of the island.
  4. Drive the Road to Hana in Maui. With over 30 miles of beaches, Maui is understandably a hot destination for beach vacation enthusiasts. Kaanapali Beach is a favorite for those looking for a diverse experience; you can swim, parasail, surf, cliff dive, and play volleyball all along this 1.5-mile stretch of beach. Maui is also known for the Road to Hana, a scenic, hair-raising drive through 42 miles of twists and turns along the cliffs of Maui’s wild northern coast.
