How to pick the perfect vacation rental in Sonoma

Located north of San Francisco and west of Napa Valley, Sonoma is in the heart of California’s wine industry and the birthplace of winemaking in California, dating back to the original vineyards of Mission San Francisco Solano. But Sonoma offers more than wineries; it boasts more than 60 regional and state parks for exploring, a bustling arts industry, and it’s home to both the Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival and the Sonoma International Film Festival.

Follow these tips to help you pick the perfect Sonoma vacation rental for your travel plans.

  1. Where to stay near Sonoma wineries. To stay near some of Sonoma’s most popular wineries—including Scribe Winery, Buena Vista Winery, and Gundlach Bundschu Winery—stay east of Sonoma, in areas such as Buena Vista and Batto. This is also the same general direction as Napa Valley, which could make a fun day trip to explore more commercial wineries.
  2. Where to stay to enjoy art and cultural activities.Sonoma County is home to thousands of artists and over 120 performing arts companies—which is more artists per capita than anywhere else in California—so there’s never a shortage in cultural activities around the city and surrounding county. For easy access to shows and performances, stay west of Sonoma near the Green Music Center and Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Use the county’s guide to current art exhibits and events in Sonoma County to see what’s going on in the city limits, as well.
  3. Where to stay to for the Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival. As the oldest festival in California, the Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival happens every September and has been around for more than 120 years. To enjoy the food, wine, and art festival, plan to stay near the historic Sonoma Plaza downtown or in a vacation rental on the outskirts of town, amongst the vineyards.
  4. Where to stay for the Sonoma International Film Festival. The film festival features almost 100 films each year and welcomes 5000 of film enthusiasts annually. The festival is hosted in the heart of Sonoma, near the Sonoma Plaza and Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, but attendees can either find a nearby vacation rental or apply to stay with a host family through the festival.
  5. How to choose your own Sonoma rental experience.Travelers should be aware that the city of Sonoma does not currently allow short term vacation rentals, so plan to stay in the scenic outskirts of the city. Stay east of the city for easy access to wineries and Napa Valley, north of the city for more scenic views and a quick trip to Sugarloaf Ridge Park, and northwest of Sonoma to be close to the county’s golf course.
