How to pick the perfect vacation rental in Taos

Surrounded by scenic mountains, Taos, New Mexico is a popular destination for skiers and art enthusiasts alike. Peruse your way through downtown to see the iconic art in museums and galleries such as the Harwood Museum of Art, created by the thousands of artists who call Taos home, or head north toward Wheeler Peak to ski, bike, and hike. If you’re feeling really adventurous, go llama trekking, as well.

Follow these tips to help you pick the perfect Taos, New Mexico vacation rental for your travel plans.

  • Where to stay to go skiing. In the winter, folks travel to Taos to ski in the surrounding mountains, including New Mexico’s highest peak, Wheeler Peak. The Taos area has four ski areas–Taos Ski Valley, Red River, Sipapu, and Angel Fire—all located about 30 minutes north from the town of Taos. Folks can either stay in town and travel to the slopes daily or rent a house near the ski areas and plan to drive into town for restaurants and shopping.
  • Where to stay near art museums. There are three art museums in Taos: Harwood Museum of Art, Taos Art Museum and Millicent Rogers Museum that feature art from the Pueblo Native Americans, Taos Society of Artists and artists of the Taos art colony. Additionally, Taos boasts more than 80 art galleries. Luckily, most of the art museums and galleries are located downtown, near the historic Taos Plaza.
  • Where to stay to go llama trekking.A truly unique New Mexico attraction, llama trekking allows folks to bring along a furry friend for hiking around Taos. Popular llama trekking company Wild Earth Llama Adventures leads expeditions in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area and the Columbine/Hondo Wilderness Study Area just north of Taos Ski Valley. Consider staying north of Taos, near the ski areas, if you plan to spend a day with llamas.
  • Where to stay to go biking. In Taos, visitors can enjoy both street and mountain biking. For the best street biking, stay near Lower Ranchitos Road, which offers paved roads without much traffic. Biking the 28 miles to Arroyo Seco or 35 miles to Taos Ski Valley are also popular trips. For mountain biking, the South Boundary trail east of Taos is consistently ranked the best trail in New Mexico. Stay north if you plan to check out the West Rim Trail, just across the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.
  • How to choose your own Taos rental experience.Where you stay in Taos, New Mexico depends on what you want to get out your trip. Stay in town for easy access to restaurants, art museums, shopping, and historical landmarks. If you plan to ski or hike the entire trip, consider looking for vacation rentals north of town near the ski areas.
